This is my first contribution, Sam Buckley helped me get started with it, and although he might think I've got a screw loose with this rendition, this sounds pretty close the way I hear it. If anyone thinks different, you're welcome to submit corrections with nary a hard feeling.

 Verse 1
She was (G) holding her breath, and he (C) attempted a prayer
And he was (Em) cussin' the dust, risin' (Am) up in the (D7) air
'Cuz the (G) ol' cattle trail well it (C) weren't any-(Em)-where
For a (Am) baby to (C) draw its first (D7) breath

 Verse 2
And the (G) unbroken west, well it was (C) no place to live
'Cuz it was (Em) hard to survive, and it was (Am) Hell if you (D7) did
So he (G) entered this world with a (C) pair of clenched (Em) fists
And the (Am) first and last (C) tears he'd (D7) shed

 Chorus 1
And the (D) longhorns lowed him a (G) welcome
As a (Em) new voice cried (D) from the buck-(C)-board
And the (Am) Irish they sang sad and (Em) lonely
'Cuz (C) they knew a (D) cowboy was (C) born

 Verse 3
Well the (G) prairies closed in, and a (C) century passed
The (Em) settlers plowed under the (Am) tall prairie (D7) grass
And the (G) cow towns died off in a (C) world changin' (Em) fast
But the (Am) wind kept the (C) spirit a-(D7)-live

 Verse 4
Because a (G) young boy in Kansas, he caught a (C) breeze one day
And in a (Em) five-second rush, he was (Am) fightin' for (D7) eight
He saw it (G) all so clear through the (C) dirt on his (Em) face
He (Am) knew he was (C) born to (D7) ride

 Chorus 2
And a (D) long lost heir to the (G) saddle
Finally (Em) found his (D) way back (C) home
As he (Am) picked up his hat, well the (Em) crowd cheered
'Cuz (C) they knew a (D) cowboy was (C) born
Yeah (Em) that day a (D) cowboy was (G) born

 Chorus 3
From the (D) heroes in the bright lights of (G) Vegas
To the (Em) poets of the (D) sage and (C) thorn
 A proud (Am) legacy (C) of a na-(Em)-tion
 (C) Thank God the (D) cowboy was (C) born
Yeah (Em) thank God the (D) cowboy was (G) born
